In this exercise we focus on eliminating “Um”, keeping hand gestures concise and non-distracting, and on using the power of silence. I then holler, “South facing students move two chairs to your right.

Now, North facing students move one chair to your right!

I had no idea it would be such a productive use of time!

Sometimes the biggest turn-offs during the sales process are the unconscious mannerisms that sales people display without even realizing it! I have my 28 students (in my Strategic Selling class) sit on both sides of their tables facing a partner.

“Speed interviewing” and the concepts supporting it come directly from the social phenomena known as “speed dating.” Supported by lots of cognitive research that suggests initial intuition is as accurate as or more accurate than prolonged assessment, a few leading-edge organizations are hopping on board and testing speed interviewing as a possible solution to end the giant disconnect between society today and the HR systems of yesterday.

HR traditionalists are probably wondering how anyone could gather enough information in a short burst of interaction to make a decision as complicated as whom to hire.

After all, there are so many parameters to consider.
